Motion Controllers
A motion control system manages the position, velocity, force, or pressure of a machine. Consider, for instance, an electromechanical-based motion control system. It is composed of a motion controller (the system's central processing unit), a drive (which amplifies the low power command signal from the motion controller into high power current/voltage for the motor), a motor (which translates electrical energy into mechanical energy), a feedback device (which relays signals back to the motion controller for adjustments until the desired result is achieved), and a mechanical system (inclusive of actuators that actualize the desired outcome).
The motion controller or automation controller is the brain of a motion control system. It is tasked with calculating and issuing output commands to generate the desired motion path or trajectory. The complexity of motion controllers varies, with sophisticated ones typically incorporating a trajectory generator (path planner), an interpolator, and a control loop for servo motor control.
