Spring Applied Brakes
Spring applied brakes, sometimes referred to as fail safe or safety brakes, are designed so that when electrical power is off, the brake comes on (power-off brake engagement). They are designed to stop or hold a load when electrical power is either accidentally lost or intentionally shut off. Power off brakes can be designed to be used as a holding brake, or dynamically where an emergency stop functionality is needed (E-stop). Servo2Go supplies a range of spring applied power off brakes. Engagement
When no current or voltage is applied to the brake, springs push against the pressure plate, squeezing the friction disk between the inner pressure plate and outer cover plate. This frictional clamping force is then transferred to the hub. Spring applied (power off) brakes are considered engaged when no power is applied to them.
Disengagement
When the brake must be released, a voltage or current is applied to the coil, creating a magnetic field. This magnetic field then pulls the pressure plate against the springs, creating an air gap between the pressure plate and the friction disk. This allows the friction disk to turn freely with the shaft.
Applications
Spring applied brakes can be used in a variety of industries and applications, including:
- Servo motors
- Safety critical applications
- Elevators
