Stepper Motors & Drives Selection

Stepper systems, comprising a step motor and a stepper drive, are designed for either open or closed loop operation. Open loop systems are cost-effective and simpler, operating without feedback, making them ideal for many applications despite potential performance issues when faced with unexpected resistance. Closed loop systems, however, use feedback, typically via encoders, to ensure precise motion by adjusting output and correcting deviations.

Step motors are characterized by fixed mechanical motion increments, or "steps," typically measured in degrees. They offer high torque at low speeds, can hold loads without overheating, and perform precise incremental movements, often without the need for feedback encoders. The combination of a step motor and stepper drive allows for accurate rotation, with standard systems completing 200 steps per revolution (about 1.8° per step).

There are various stepper drives available that enhance motor performance. Microstep drivers increase resolution by positioning the motor at smaller increments between full steps, though with reduced torque. This results in quieter operation and smoother rotation, particularly useful for mitigating low-speed resonance. Drivers with oscillators generate pulses for preset speeds, and full/half step drivers facilitate both 1.8° full step and 0.9° half step operations, providing flexibility in motion control.

These systems are engineered to produce consistent torque, eliminating the need for maintenance, and speed calculation is straightforward, simply dividing steps per revolution by the pulse rate. Step motors are well-suited for applications requiring precise control, quick speed attainment, and the ability to maintain position without continuous power consumption.
